Tattoos FAQs

No alcohol 24 hours before your appointment. Depending on what time your appointment is, please try and make sure you have had something to eat and drink about an hour before.

Please be aware we will not tattoo anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Make sure you dress so that you can easily expose the area that you are likely to get your tattoo. Also, the tattoo will be dressed afterward, and we wouldn’t advise any tight clothing going on after this. Tattoo ink may stain clothing, your tattoo artist will do his best to keep your clothing clean. Though there is always a possibility of getting ink on your clothes, so dark clothing is favourable.

We will not tattoo the face, palms of the hands or soles of the feet.

We recommend at least 6 weeks before exposing a fresh tattoo to sun/sea/swimming. This is due to the risk of poor healing and infection.

Itching is a very normal part of healing a tattoo. As tattoos only break the very top layer of skin it is likely to itch and flake a little. It’s very important to not pick or scratch at your tattoo.

We do not recommend the use of any numbing cream. These types of creams block your pores and absorb into the skin making it very hard to tattoo. Tattoos done after the application of numbing cream are at a very high risk of fading or “pushing the ink out”.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, please get in touch with us to rearrange your appointment.

Getting a tattoo when your immune system isn't at 100% isn't a good idea. You're going to need your strength and your white blood cells to heal your tattoo, something your body won't be able to do if it's already doing battle against virus and bacteria.

It will take some time for your skin to heal enough for you to shave again and it can vary from person to person.

Potentially, it's more likely if the gain is significant. Your skin is very stretchy naturally anyway so you probably won’t notice a difference in the ink!

18+ only! This is the law. And we require physical ID in the form of a passport or drivers license ONLY. We do not accept pictures or scans of either.

We cannot tattoo you if any of these apply:

• You are under the age of 18 or don't bring your ID with you to your appointment

• You have taken any blood thinning medication 24 hours beforehand (e.g. Aspirin)
• Taken any recreational drugs or alcohol in the 24 hours beforehand
• If you're pregnant or breastfeeding
• You must have eaten in the last 4 hours before getting a tattoo, to avoid feeling ill or faint
• Health conditions such as Epilepsy will require a doctors note, please contact us at customercare@astridandmiyu.com for more information

It can be up to 6 weeks before your tattoo is fully healed. You will know when this is complete as the tattoo stops being shiny.

It does vary in time slightly, depending on the size and how well your skin is taking the ink as some people have softer skin than others.

Moisturise! Over time tattoos do settle into being matte on your skin so its very important to keep your skin hydrated and always wear an SPF of at least 50 on all your tattoos.

Tattoos age, much like your skin. Over the years and years to come, you might notice a slight depigmentation of the ink however a little moisturiser will usually bring this back to life.

While your tattoo is covered with a second skin, you can continue with your normal daily routine.

This is a medical-grade, water-resistant film adapted for tattoo healing. You can shower while wearing it, but try to avoid long exposure to water, as it can cause moisture to get underneath. To protect your tattoo and the bandage, wear loose and comfortable clothing.

It’s normal to see some moisture or blurriness under the film, that’s plasma from your skin. It helps your tattoo heal by bringing small ink particles to the surface, so don’t worry if you notice it.

After removing the bandage, for about two weeks, apply Hustle Butter or Coconut oil (cold-pressed coconut butter) 3–5 times a day (or as advised by your artist). Use only a thin layer, just enough to lightly cover the tattoo. Avoid over-moisturising, as too much product can slow healing and pull pigment from the skin.

Please avoid intense exercise for two weeks. Sweat, tight clothing, and unclean surfaces can cause irritation or infection.

If you have pets, make sure your tattoo doesn’t come into contact with pet hair during the first week, as the skin is still open and sensitive.

During the first 2–4 weeks, avoid:

  • Swimming or soaking in pools, baths, the sea, or hot tubs.
  • Prolonged sun exposure, as it can dry or fade your tattoo.

Keep the second skin on for 3–5 days after your appointment. To remove it, gently stretch the film in the direction it was applied under warm running water. It will need a bit of pressure to come off. If you see some ink on the film, that’s completely normal.

If the film starts peeling or feels uncomfortable before 3 days, remove it and start applying Hustle Butter or Coconut oil three times a day for two weeks.

For the first week after removing the bandage, wash your tattoo twice a day (morning and evening) with a mild, fragrance-free soap, and gently pat dry before applying your aftercare balm.

Why Aftercare Matters

The goal of tattoo aftercare is to keep your skin clean, protected, and moisturised for a smooth healing process and the best possible results. Please follow the instructions carefully. Using too much or too little cream can both affect healing.

Your tattoo journey with us will look somewhat like this:

When you arrive, you fill in necessary forms and choose your design with our specialist staff. During the appointment, your artist will confirm design and placement, show you all the equipment they are going to use is single use and sterile. Then they will start tattooing! They will also explain any necessary risks and precautions.

All of our inks are vegan friendly.

We won't be able to do any offensive or curse words with our personalised tattoo service.

No, once the stencil has been printed we can't change the design. We won't be able to take any responsibility for incorrect spelling on your tattoo. When you arrive to your appointment you'll agree your tattoo with the artist on a computer, which is when the stencil is printed. After this point we won't be able to change any spellings.
